Knights Win Series !!

Sat. July 19 at Merivale Arena

The Nepean Knights opened up a 10 - 3 lead after 2 periods and hung on to win 12 - 9 and take the series over the Akwesasne Lightning 3 games to 2. Also see game coverage at sportscommunity.ca

Callum Crawford opened the scoring just 29 seconds into the game and the Knights never looked back. A quick-stick powerplay goal by Mike King on a lovely feed from Mickey Gilchrist made it 2 - 0 before many of the fans had taken their seats. Nepean then took 3 straight penalties but managed to give up 1 only goal. After the 3rd penalty expired the teams traded goals to make it 3 - 2 Knights after 11 minutes of play. On the only other penalty of the period, Nepean's powerplay made no mistake as Ian Crawford went top corner to make the score 4 - 2 after 1 period.

Two minutes into the second period Nepean went to the penalty box again, but this time Brennan Sarazin netted a shorthanded marker to extend the lead to 5 - 2. Four straight even strength goals ran the score to 9 - 2 before the Lightning could respond on the powerplay in the last minute to narrow the gap to 9 - 3. Matt Cowie went coast to coast for the Knights 10th goal with 28 seconds showing on the clock and that's the way the second period ended.

The 3rd period turned out to be a nailbiter for Nepean fans as the Lightning stormed the Knights net, scoring 3 goals in the opening 2:41 and narrowing the gap to 10 - 6. A goalie change gave time for the Nepean defense to settle down, and starter Brad Conlon returned to his spot between the pipes within a minute of the swap. Mike King then scored a crucial goal restoring the 5 goal cushion with 13 minutes left in the game. The Knights defense shut out the Lightning for a span of 14 minutes, however a late 3 goal rally including a Lightning powerplay goal made it interesting with 2:30 showing on the game clock. Nepean ran out the shot clock on their next two possessions while the defense held firm and a last minute empty net goal by Chris Parker sealed the deal 12 - 9.

The Knights now await the winner of the Barrie vs Mimico series.

Knights Even Up Series

Fri. July 18 at Akwesasne

The Nepean Knights scored 2 third period goals to break a 5 - 5 tie and killed off a late penalty to preserve the 7 - 5 win over the Akwesasne Lightning forcing a 5th and deciding game Saturday night in Nepean.

Callum Crawford scored the first of his hat trick 1:43 into the game giving the Knights a lead they would never relinquish. Brennan Sarazin went top corner on a breakaway at the 12:36 mark and just 30 seconds later Callum Crawford made it 3 - 0. The Lighning got one back on the powerplay 3 1/2 minutes later, and went back on the man advantage as the Knights were assessed 2 minutes on a play after the goal was scored. Brad Conlon in nets and the rest of the penalty kill team held off the Lighting to send the teams to intermission with Nepean leading 3 - 1.

Akwesasne scored 5 1/2 minutes into the 2nd period to close the gap to 3 - 2, but the Knights scored the next 2 goals to open up a 3 goal lead. A 4-on-4 goal by the Lightning with less than 2 minutes to play in the period made it 5 - 3 at the break.

In the first 5 minutes of the 3rd period Akwesasne scored twice to tie up the game and were on a roll having counted the last 3 goals of the game. Once again the Knights defense and goaltending stiffened, holding off the Lightning until Ian Crawford scored the game winner on a breakaway pass  from Nick Hughboy with 12:24 to play. Callum Crawford followed up a minute later on the same 4-on-4 to make it 7 - 5. Late in the game the Knights were assessed 4 minutes and the Lightning receiving 2 minutes, resulting in a Lightning powerplay  with 3 1/2 minutes showing on the clock. The Knights penalty kill unit came through again, denying any dangerous scoring chances, and some fine ball-ragging ran out the clock to give Nepean the win and tie up the series at 2 games each.

Knights Win !!

Tue. July 15 at Merivale Arena

The Nepean Knights staved off elimination with a 5 - 2 win over the Akwesasne Lightning Tuesday night at home.

The first period set the tone for the game as there was only 1 goal scored despite a pair of powerplay opportunities for both sides, including a 1 minute 4-on-3 advantage for the Lightning. The single goal was scored by Akwesasne with 6:03 on the clock while the teams were playing 4-on-4.

In the second period Callum Crawford tied the game at 1-1 just 2 seconds after the end of a Lightning penalty. Brennan Sarazin finished off a fine passing play from King and Cowie to give the Knights the lead at the 11:58 mark. After Nepean's man-down unit killed off another penalty, Crawford notched his second of the game on the powerplay to extend the lead to 3 - 1. In the final minute, the Knights pulled off the hidden ball trick and scored on a great feed from Cowie to Gilchrist who deposited the ball into the empty net while the goalie was still looking for who had the ball.

The Knights opened the 3rd with Cowie winning the draw and leading a 2-on-1 rush. He fed Parker who made no mistake going "lefty", giving the Knights a 4 goal cushion just 6 seconds into the period. The Lightning answered back 4 minutes later, but the rest of the period was dominated by the goalies and defenses as the score ended 5 - 2 Knights.

Akwesasne still leads the series 2 games to 1, with the next game Friday night 8:00 pm at Akwesasne.

Knights Down 0 - 2

Mon. July 14 at Akwesasne

The Nepean Knights are facing elimination after dropping a 10 - 8 decision to the Akwesasne Lightning.

The game started out cautiously with both teams playing tight defense. Nepean struck first on the powerplay, only to have the Lightning answer back quickly. An exchange of goals left the score tied at 2 - 2 when the scoring floodgates opened. First, Matt Cowie found net on a well executed 6-on-5 during a delayed penalty. Just seconds after the ensuing faceoff, each team was penalized making it 4-on-4 lacrosse. Akwesasne took full advantage scoring twice within a minute to take a 4 - 3 lead. The Knights received an additional 2 minute penalty and a Lightning powerplay made it 5 - 3. The Knights narrowed the gap with just 37 seconds remaining in the period on a side-arm blast by Raj Wasson.

Only 1 goal was scored in the first 12 minutes of the second period, and it was the Lightning who extended their lead to 6 - 4. However, the final 7 1/2 minutes would be full of action as Akwesasne outscored Nepean 4 to 3 to make the intermission tally 10 - 7 for the home team. Starting things off was an exchange of goals prior to an unsuccessful powerplay chance for the Knights. The Lightning squeezed in another goal before their next penalty making it 8 - 5, and while successfully killing it, scored a short-handed marker to go up 9 - 5. Offsetting penalties with just over 2 minutes remaining made for some wide open 4-on-4 lacrosse and Akwesasne scored first to open up a 5 goal lead before the Knights responded with a pair from Callum Crawford in the final minute of the second period.

Nepean changed goalies with just over a minute left in the second, and Brad Conlon carried on in nets during the 3rd period shutting down Akwesasne while facing 18 shots. Unfortunately for the Knights, they could only muster a single goal in the final frame and fell short again, losing 10 - 8.

Game 3 is Tuesday at 8:00 pm at Merivale Arena.

Knights Lose Home Opener

Sat. July 12 at Merivale Arena

Nepean dropped a 9 - 8 decision to the visiting Akwesasne Lightning, the Knights first loss at home this season and now trail in the series 1 game to zero.

The Knights got off to a quick start with 2 goals in the opening 4 minutes, but over the course of the next 10 minutes of back and forth lacrosse, the Lightning tied it up at 2 - 2. With under 3 minutes to play, Akwesasne took a 3 - 2 lead, and held on until intermission despite having to kill off a penalty.

Nepean again struck quickly, scoring a pair in the first 2 minutes of the second period for a 4 - 3 advantage, only to see the lead disappear by the 13 minute mark as Akwesasne replied with a pair to re-take the lead 5 - 4. With just over 5 minutes to play in the 2nd, the Lightning received a 5 minute penalty and the Knights capitalized on the opportunity by scoring twice to move ahead 6 - 5. In the final minute of the period a costly turnover by Nepean gave Akwesasne a breakaway which resulted in a goal sending the teams to the lockers tied at 6 - 6.

In a reverse of fortunes, the Lightning scored the first two goals of the third period including a short-handed marker to open up an 8 - 6 lead. The Knights battled back on goals by Mickey Gilchrist and Raj Wasson to tie the game at 8 - 8 with 7:21 showing on the clock. After almost 7 minutes of scoreless end-to-end action, Akwesasne netted the winner with 27 seconds remaining in the game, and won possession of the ensuing faceoff to seal the victory.

Game 2 is at Akwesasne Monday night at 8:00 pm.

Knights Wins Series !!

Sat. July 5 at Halton Hills

The Nepean Knights clinched the series by a 3 game to 1 margin with a 10 - 6 overtime victory over the Halton Hills Bulldogs.

The Knights Game 3 scoring drought extended through the opening period of Game 4 despite having 3 powerplay opportunities. Meanwhile the Bulldogs continue to hold a hot powerplay, scoring on both their chances. Halton Hills took a 3 - 0 lead into the first intermission.

The Knights were given more opportunities to take control of the game with 4 powerplay chances in the second frame, one of which was a 5 minute major. Despite having the man advantage for over 10 minutes, the Knights only managed a single powerplay goal. Fortunately the defense held the Bulldogs scoreless which left Halton Hills hanging onto a 3 - 2 lead after 2 periods.

The Knights continued to pour on the pressure in the third and broke through for 2 goals in the first 7 minutes to take their first lead of the game, 4 - 3. After successfully killing a minor penalty to maintain their slim margin, the Knights were assessed a 5 minute major with just under 8 minutes remaining. The penalty kill team and goalie Ian Hourston stood their ground for over 3 minutes until Callum Crawford fired a short handed marker to give Nepean a 2 goal cushion with just over 3 1/2 minutes on the clock. The Knights killed off another 1 minute of the major penalty, but the Bulldogs finally connected on the man advantage with just 41 seconds remaining in the penalty. Nepean's defense continued to keep Halton Hills' offense at bay until the Bulldogs pulled their goalie with under a minute left and scored with just 43 seconds showing on the clock to send the game to overtime.

Mickey Gilchrist drew first blood for the Knights on a solo effort just over a minute into the overtime. Ian Crawford then went top corner on a perfectly executed 2-on-1 with Wayne Bonnet 90 seconds later to give the Knights a 2 goal cushion, but it was short lived as the Bulldogs countered a mere 18 seconds after the faceoff. Not to be denied, Brennan Sarazin waited only 33 seconds before powering a shot through the Bulldogs goalie to restore the 2 goal lead. Another pair of goals by Chris Kirk and Mickey Gilchrist rounded out the scoring and sealed the game and series victory for the Nepean Knights.

Knights Drop Game 3

Fri. July 4 at Halton Hills

The Halton Hills Bulldogs climbed back into the series with an 11 - 6 win over the visiting Nepean Knights.

The Knights opened the scoring early, but were in penalty trouble throughout the period and the Bulldogs made them pay by scoring 3 powerplay goals to take a 5 - 2 lead.

In the second period the roles were reversed as the Knights scored a powerplay goal plus 3 others against 2 goals by the Bulldogs to head into the third with the Knights trailing 7 - 6.

Two early third period goals by Halton Hills and a period of shutout defense sunk the Knights who now lead the series 2 games to 1.

Knights Take 2 - 0 Series Lead

Sun.  June 29 at Merivale Arena

The Nepean Knights won game 2 by a score of 12 - 4 to take a well-deserved 2 games to 0 lead in the best of 5 series with the Halton Hills Bulldogs.

The Knights opened the scoring just over 3 minutes into the game on a on overhand rip by Callum Crawford. After 3 more minutes of back and forth lacrosse the Knights took a penalty but successfully killed it off thanks to some fine defensive work and great goaltending by Ian Hourston. Brennan Sarazin and Raj Wasson scored 34 seconds apart to give Nepean a 3 - 0 lead, but quickly got into more penalty trouble and found themselves 2 men short for 45 seconds. Another solid effort by the penalty kill team preserved the lead until late in the period when the Knights got a powerplay marker of their own, quickly followed by an even strength goal to finish the period ahead 5 - 0.

Although Halton Hills scored the first goal of the second frame while short-handed, they took all 5 penalties handed out that period and paid the price as the Knights cashed in on 2 of them. An even strength marker for Halton Hills counted for the only other goal which left the score at 7 - 2 after two.

In the third, Nepean quickly notched a power play goal on a Bulldog penalty that carried over from the second period and added a 5-on-5 goal to make it 9 - 2 and after that the clock was on the Knight's side.

Knights Take Game 1

Sat.  June 28 at Merivale Arena

The Nepean Knights opened the best of 5 playoff series against the visiting Halton Hills Bulldogs with a decisive 14 - 5 win behind the solid goaltending of Ian Hourston.

Halton Hills opened the scoring just over a minute into the game when they caught the Knights on a bad line change. Matt Cowie evened things up just 6 seconds later when he cleanly won the draw and raced in alone to find the back of the net. A long shot by Mickey Gilchrist gave the Knights a lead they would not relinquish, after which the Bulldogs got into penalty trouble. They killed off the first 2 minute penalty, but right afterwards took a 5 minute major for checking-from-behind. The Knights made them pay dearly as Mike King sniped a pair of goals from the crease in a span of 38 seconds to extend the lead to 4 - 1. Halton Hills scored an even strength goal to get within 2 goals, but failed to get any closer as the Knights killed off a late penalty of their own to finish the period ahead 4 - 2.

Nepean opened the second period with a floor length rush by Reid Thrasher and a goal to increase the lead to 5 - 2. Halton Hills responded with a power-play goal, but that's all the scoring there would be in the first 11 minutes. After the lull in scoring, a pair of goals within 25 seconds by Raj Wasson and Callum Crawford extended the Knights lead to 7 - 3. The Bulldogs had one final chance to get back into the game when the Knights received a penalty for delay-of-game, but Brennan Sarazin snuffed out any hope as he intercepted a pass in his own end and outraced the opposition to score short-handed making it 8 - 3. A late marker by Ian Crawford on a floor length dash ended the period 9 - 3 for the home team.

Nepean scored 2 more goals early in the third period, and then Halton Hills took a string of penalties to give the Knights a final pair of power-play markers.

Knights Clinch 1st Place

Sat.  June 21 at Merivale Arena

The Knights capped off their regular season with a 15 - 8 victory over the visiting Welland Warlords, and in the process clinched 1st place in the Far East. The win also made it a perfect season at home with a 10 and 0 record in the friendly confines of Merivale Arena.

Nepean opened the scoring on a powerplay goal by Raj Wasson and opened a 2 - 0 lead by the 6 minute mark only to have Welland tie the game at 2 - 2 within a minute and a half span. The goalies shut out their opposition for the next 9 minutes until the Knights erupted for 3 goals in 27 seconds to open a 5 - 2 lead with under 2 minutes to play in the first. Welland responded quickly and the teams headed to the break with the score 5 - 3 for the home team.

The second period was a back and forth affair with powerplay goals dominating as Nepean went 3 for 4 while the Warlords went 2 for 2. Each team had an even strength goal to make the score at the end of the 2nd  9 - 6 for the Knights.

In the third period Welland scored first to narrow the gap to 2 goals, but Nepean's Alex Vidoni got that one back at the 6 minute mark. A penalty to the Knights appeared to give the Warlords another opportunity to get back into the game, however a pair of shorthanded markers by Ian Crawford snuffed out any hope by opening the lead to 5 goals at 12 - 7.

The Knights will be at home next weekend to open the playoffs with their opponent yet to be determined.

Records Fall as Knights Win #14

Fri.  June 20 at Merivale Arena

The Knights defeated the visiting Onondaga Red Hawks 18 - 5 to move within 1 game of clinching first place and along the way a number of records were broken.

Mickey Gilchrist became the Nepean Knights career leading scorer with 378 points (177 goals and 201 assists) surpassing the previous mark of 376 points held by Bryden Denyes. Earlier in the season Mickey became the career leader in assists, and he is now just 38 goals short of claiming the career goal scoring lead.

The Knights scored 10 goals in the second period and 18 goals overall, both season highs.

After a 9 day layoff between games due to the Jr B All Star game this past weekend, the Knights came out slowly, dropping several passes and allowing Onondaga to open the scoring just 32 seconds into the game. It took the Knights 6 full minutes to put behind the Red Hawks goalkeeper, but after that they fired three goals within a minute and ended the period up 4 - 1.

The second period was all Knights as they outscored Onondaga 10 - 1 and showed excellent creativity moving the ball around effortlessly.

Midget call-up Josh Giguere replaced starter Ian Hourston in nets for the third period and made several big saves as the Knights defense left him alone all too often with a Red Hawk shooter on his doorstep.

Nepean Scoring:

Gilchrist..3,5   B.Sarazin..3,2   I.Crawford..2,2   Wasson..1,3   King..2,1   Thrasher..1,2   C.Crawford..1,1   Cowie..1,1   Kirk..1,1   Buchanan..1,1   Parker..0,2   E.Sarazen..1,0   Mutch..1,0

Knights Drop Squeaker

Wed. June 1 at Akwesasne

The Knights blew a 3 goal third period lead and dropped a 10 - 9 decision to division rival Akwesasne Lightning.

The 1st period was a back and forth affair with both goalies denying several good scoring opportunities. Raj Wasson netted a powerplay goal while the Lightning responded with an even strength goal to make the score 1 - 1 heading to intermission.

Nepean scored only 13 seconds into the 2nd period on a quick stick by Kirk from Callum Crawford. Akwesasne got into penalty trouble by taking a 5 minute penalty as well as a 2 minute minor all within the first 5 minutes. The Knights made the most of it as they counted 2 powerplay markers to open up a 4 - 1 lead. The teams traded 4 goals each during the rest of the period to make the score 8 - 5 for the Knights heading into the final frame.

After 5 scoreless minutes into the 3rd period, the Lightning closed to within 2 goals, then added another at the halfway mark of the 3rd to narrow the gap to one at 8 - 7 Nepean. The Knights killed off a penalty only to have Akwesasne tie the game just moments after the penalized player stepped onto the floor. Game tied at 8 - 8 with 7 1/2 minutes to play. A pair of goals by the Lightning just 11 seconds apart gave them their first lead of the game at 10 - 8 with 3 1/2 minutes to play. Nepean scored a final goal with 1 second remaining but it was not enough as the Lightning hung on for the win.

Knights Notch Win #12

Sat. June 7 at Merivale Arena

The Knights notched their 12th win in convincing fashion, defeating the visiting Markham Ironheads 11 - 4.

Nepean's Matt Cowie scored the only goal for either team in the first 16 minutes on a nice pass and catch play with Callum Crawford, but after that it was all Knights. Three goals in a span of a minute fifty-one staked the Knights to a 4 - 0 first period lead they would never relinquish.

Nepean scored the first 3 goals of the second period before Markham finally broke the goose-egg with only 46 seconds remaining until intermission.

The Knights won the third period 4 - 3 in a penalty filled frame and sealed the 2 points.

11th Win an Odd Affair

Sun. June 1 at Gloucester

The 11th win was a last-minute gift in a game that could have easily gone the other way. Neither team had more than a two-goal lead at any time, and Nepean ran into penalty troubles in the second and third. A graduate of Nepean's minor system, and not normally a goaltender,  was in goal for the first time for Gloucester, and did a great job, although Nepean's offensive team was again having problems hitting the net.

The first and second periods were defensive battles with very few shots. Nepean led 3 - 1 at the end; shots were Nepean 12 and Gloucester 8. In the second period, Gloucester caught up. From that point the lead shifted back and forth, with each team answering the other's goals. End of the second, 5-5. Shots: Nepean 13, Gloucester 12.

The pace picked up in the third, with back and forth action. Several four-minute penalties gave Gloucester plenty of opportunity to put the ball past Ian Hourston. Gloucester almost doubled Nepean's shots (25 to 15) and went into the final minutes with the lead. Mickey Gilchrist scored the tying goal with 1:04 left in the game and, just when it looked like we were going to overtime with 11 seconds left, Raj Wasson scored the winning goal. Final score Nepean 10, Gloucester 9.

Knights win #10 on the Road

Wed. May 28 at Gloucester

Nepean started a new winning streak and reached its 10th win in a routine match of mild intensity in Gloucester. For most of the game, Nepean dominated, doubling the shots and winning most of the draws.  The players were not as successful in putting the ball in the net, however. In one 30 second shot clock, Nepean players had 8 clear shot attempts - but missed the net by a wide margin on each and every try.  And the team was caught with their defensive pants down several times by determined rushes up the floor by Gloucester players.

Nepean started the game with two quick goals, and then put another one in at the halfway mark.  Gloucester answered the first two goals with one of their own, and then held on until the end, when Nepean stopped playing before the buzzer. No penalties were called.  Score at the end of the first ... Nepean 3, Gloucester 2

Gloucester tied the game early in the second period, but Nepean took the lead back five seconds later and then pulled ahead with a power play goal.  Gloucester answered this goal within a minute, but was unable to respond to the next two goals, despite a power play at the end of the period. Score at the end of the second ... Nepean 7, Gloucester 4.

The third period was fairly evening matched: both teams took 15 shots, had offsetting penalties and scored 5 goals.  The action was fairly quick from one end to the other, with many odd man rushes, especially by Gloucester.  Nepean would hold on to win, however.  Final score - Nepean 12, Gloucester 9

Nepean Scoring:

Gilchrist..2,3    Cowie..2,3   King..1,4   B.Sarazin..3,1  C.Crawford..3,1   Wasson..0,2   Bonnet..1,0  Parker..0,1   Hourston..0,1

Knights brought down to earth during weekend road trip !!

A tie and a loss proved that the Nepean Knights need to bring their 'A' game every night or else they won't be celebrating too many more victories.

Sat. May 24 at Mimico

The Knights were outshot 14 - 10 in the opening period giving up 2 even strength goals, 2 powerplay goals and a shorthanded goal while on a 2 man advantage. Net result ... Mimico 5, Nepean 0.

During the 2nd and 3rd periods the Knights outshot Mimico 42 - 20 and tied the game  with only 1 second showing on the clock on a fine 3 way play ... Matt Cowie to Ian Crawford to Brennan Sarazin who made no mistake, finding nothing but net.

In overtime an outstanding floor length sprint by Reid Thrasher resulted in his first goal of the season and put the Knights in front for the first time in the game with less than 2 minutes showing on the clock. On the ensuing faceoff, a fast break tied the game for Mimico and that's how it ended 11- 11.

Sun. May 25 at Halton Hills

The Knights kept it close until another shorthanded goal in the second period gave Halton Hills a 4 - 1 lead which they stretched to 6 - 2 by the end of the frame.

In the third, the teams traded goals, then Halton Hills went on another 3 goal run to open up a commanding 10 - 3 lead before the Knights reeled off 5 straight goals to close the gap, but too little too late.

Final score Halton Hills 11 - Nepean 9

Nine is oh so Fine !!

Wed. May 21 at Akwesasne

The Knights toughed out a 6 - 5 win over the determined Akwesasne Lightning in a hard fought game and extended their winning streak to 9 in a row.

After catching the Lightning on an off night just two weeks earlier, the Knights met a much better prepared opponent on this night and the fans who stayed home to watch the Senators down the Devils in Stanley Cup action missed another excellent lacrosse game between these two Eastern Division rivals.

In a back and forth opening period dominated by defense, Akwesasne sandwiched a pair of goals around a single Nepean marker to take a 2 - 1 lead heading into the second.

The Lightning opened an early 3 - 1 lead only to have the Knights fire 3 straight goals to take their first lead 4 - 3 by the midway mark of the game. In the final 10 minutes of the period the Lightning killed off 2 penalties, but another even strength marker for the Knights extended their lead to 5 - 3 heading to the 2nd intermission.

The final period was again dominated by defense and goaltending but a goal by Raj Wasson on an odd-man rush with 3 1/2 minutes left in the game would prove to be the winner. The Lightning scored 2 late goals with the goalie on the bench, but it was not enough as the Knights outshot the Lightning 45 - 12 in the final 2 periods.

Knights on Fire !!

Sun. May 18 at Merivale Arena

The Knights ended one streak and kept another alive with a 13 - 10 thriller over the visiting Barrie Tornado.

The victory extends Nepean's win streak to 8 games and knocks Barrie from the ranks of the undefeated.

Barrie opened the scoring 2 1/2 minutes into the game and added another just 6 seconds later off the ensuing faceoff. The Knights answered back on the powerplay and right afterwards went back on the powerplay only to have Barrie net a shorthanded marker making it 3 - 1 Tornado. Nepean didn't miss a beat as they scored while a man-up to draw within 1, then followed up with the tying goal while the game was barely 7 minutes old. The teams traded goals to make it 4 - 4 when the Knights were assessed a penalty. Nepean turned the tables with an aggressive penalty kill and Brennan Sarazin scored on a fine breakaway feed from Ian Crawford giving the Knights their first lead of the game. A late period goal for Nepean moved the score to 6 - 4 for the home side heading to intermission.

The Knights scored just 20 seconds into the second period only to have Barrie answer back 12 seconds later. After the teams traded goals again, Barrie went on a 2 goal run to tie the game for the first time since midway through the opening period. An undisciplined Tornado 5 minute penalty opened the door for the Knights to take back a 2 goal lead, but they only managed a single goal making it 9 - 8 Nepean after 2 periods.

Barrie opened the 3rd period with another pair of goals to take the lead 10 - 9, but that would be the last goal the Knights defense would allow. Another powerplay marker tied the game with 14 minutes remaining. With under 10 minutes left the Knights were called for a penalty, but great work by the penalty kill team and goalie Brad Conlon preserved the tie. Two minutes later the Knights were given a powerplay opportunity and Mickey Gilchrist made no mistake whistling a low shot through the Tornado goalie for the game winner. The last 5 minutes were not without some exciting moments as Nepean was given a 2 minute penalty with 3:20 showing on the clock. Another aggressive penalty kill led to a floor length dash by Ian Crawford and a short handed insurance marker to seal the victory. Barrie gave it one final shot by pulling their goalie for an extra attacker, but the Knights defense intercepted a pass resulting in an empty net goal for Nepean making the final score 13 - 10.

A well played and very exciting game between 2 teams who could very well meet in the playoffs.

Lucky 7 at Home Sweet Home

Sat. May 17 at Merivale Arena

The Knights squeaked by the visiting Scarborough Saints 8 - 6 in overtime to push their winning streak to 7 in a row.

Nepean controlled the early part of the game and opened a 3 - 0 lead after only 8 minutes. It looked like an easy 2 points for the Knights until a pair of late first period powerplay goals for the Saints cut the lead to 3 - 2.

The Knights started the second period on the powerplay, but it backfired as the Saints scored shorthanded to tie the game at 3 - 3. Another Scarborough penalty and another shorthanded goal gave the Saints their first lead of the game 4 - 3. Nepean fought back to tie the game while playing 4 - on - 4, but a third Scarborough powerplay goal restored the Saints lead at 5 - 4 with just over 13 minutes left in the second frame. The rest of the period was scoreless despite both teams having powerplay opportunities.

The Knights tied the game at 5 - 5 early in the third period and the defenses took over from there as the game headed into overtime still tied 5 - 5.

Nepean had the better chances in the early part of overtime, but the Saints scored 3 1/2 minutes into the period on their only opportunity. The Knights kept pressing and drew another Scarborough penalty. A quick stick goal by Chris Kirk just after the penalty expired tied the game at 6 - 6 with 2 1/2 minutes to play. A minute later Brennan Sarazin converted a lovely Callum Crawford cross crease pass by waiting for the Saints goalie to go down, then dropping the ball top corner for the go-ahead and winning goal. A late powerplay insurance marker by Callum Crawford sealed the outcome.

Knights Extend Win Streak to 6 with Pair of Road Wins

Sat. May 10 at Milton

On Saturday night Nepean defeated the Milton Mavericks 13 - 4 behind the solid goaltending of Brad Conlon and a stingy defense.

Milton opened the scoring just 33 seconds into the game, but it would be the only goal they would get for the next 52 minutes as the Knights defense completely shut them out until the game was out of reach with Nepean leading 11 - 1.

Mickey Gilchrist led all scorers with a double hat trick as well as 3 assists.

The Knights powerplay went 5 for 7 while the penalty kill unit did not allow a goal in 6 Milton attempts.

Nepean Scoring:

Sun. May 11 at Oakville

The Knights appeared to be on their way to a repeat of Saturday night's game, but had to overcome some second period adversity before sealing the 13 - 8 win over the Oakville Buzz with 4 third period goals.

Nepean built up a 4 - 0 lead by the halfway mark of the 1st period and cruised to a 7 - 3 score heading to the first intermission.

Oakville opened the second period with heavy pressure and a 5 minute checking from behind penalty to Ryan Carisse gave the Buzz additional life. Although the Buzz only scored once on the 5 minute powerplay, the Knights were tiring on defense with the loss of Carisse due to the game misconduct, as well as the injury to Mike Macdonald the night before, leaving Nepean with only 14 runners.

Oakville scored 2 even strength goals to close the gap to 7 - 6 by the half-way mark of the game when Nepean drew yet another penalty. The penalty kill team, goalie Ian Hourston and the rest of the defense came up big, shutting out the Buzz for the remainder of the period giving the Knights offense the chance to net 2 more goals restoring a 3 goal lead ..... 9 - 6.

Nepean scored early in the third to open up a 4 goal cushion and then cruised to victory with a solid 20 minutes of lacrosse.

Nepean Scoring:

12 - 7 Victory over Akwesasne Makes it 4 in a Row

May 7, 2003 at Merivale Arena

The Knights defeated the Akwesasne Lightning Wednesday night 12 - 7 to up their record to 4 and 2 after opening the season with 2 losses.

Nepean opened the game strongly, dominating play in the offensive, but couldn't beat Lightning goalie Dylan Adams. Just short of the halfway mark in the period Akwesasne netted the first goal, but that opened the way for the Knights who counted the next three. A late Lightning strike sent the teams to the dressing with the home side leading 3 - 2 despite outshooting the visitors 25 - 11.

A Lightning powerplay goal early in the second tied the game up at 3 - 3, however the Knights poured in the next 5 goals to lead 8 - 3 just over halfway through the contest. After 2 periods it was Nepean 10 Akwesasne 4.

The final frame was closely contested and the Knights were outscored 3 to 2, but it was too little too late as Nepean coasted to a 12 - 7 win.

Knights Win 3rd in a Row

May 4, 2003 at Merivale Arena

The Knights defeated the Clarington Green Gaels 13-11 Sunday afternoon to win their third in a row.

Nepean jumped out to a 4 - 1 first period lead, but the Gaels scored 3 goals in the final 4 minutes to tie up the game heading to the first intermission.

The 2 teams traded pairs of goals in the first 8 minutes of the second to make the score 6 - 6, but while playing 4-on-4 lacrosse, Callum Crawford, Mickey Gilchrist and Chris Kirk all scored within 50 seconds to give the Knights a 9 - 6 lead just past the halfway mark. The second period ended with Nepean ahead 10 - 7.

Five minutes into the third period Chris Kirk scored on the powerplay to stake the Knights to a 4 goal lead, but the Gaels weren't done quite yet. A shorthanded goal followed by an even-strength marker brought the Gaels within 2 at 11 - 9, only to see Nepean get one back with just under 8 minutes remaining. A penalty to Clarington with 7 minutes left seemed to spell the end of the comeback, but another shorthanded marker again closed the gap to 2 goals .... 12 - 10. Both defenses tightened up until with 3:20 showing on the clock the Green Gaels finally clawed back to within a single goal of the Knights. Coincidental penalties with a minute and a half remaining opened up the floor to some 4-on-4 action, and with 34 seconds remaining Clarington took possession of the ball and called a time-out. With the goalie pulled Clarington had a "5-on-4 powerplay" situation but the Knights penalty-kill unit along with goalie Brad Conlon stymied the Gaels forcing a turnover that was scooped up by Ian Crawford who had clear sailing to the vacated Green Gaels net .... or so he thought. Before any Clarington runners could return to the bench, their goalie made a dash for the net causing a delayed too-many-men-on-the-floor penalty, but Ian Crawford made it all moot as he went top corner to seal the win 13-11.

Nepean Scoring:

Gilchrist..3,3   Wasson..1,4   C.Crawford..1,3   Kirk..3,0   King..2,0   I.Crawford..2,0   B.Sarazin..1,0   Thrasher..0,1   E.Sarazen..0,1

Knights Even Record at 2 - 2

May 3, 2003 at Merivale Arena

The Knights kept close to visiting Onondaga Red Hawks through 2 periods, pulled even in the third and won it in overtime 10 - 8.

The first period was a back and forth affair with each team netting 3 powerplay markers and an even strength goal making the score 4 - 4.

In the second Nepean outshot Onondaga, but took more penalties and ended up trailing 8 -6 going to intermission.

The Knights scored an early 3rd period goal to draw within 1, and the defense tightened up considerably, helping goalie Ian Hourston shut out the Red Hawks, including  killing off a 50 second stretch with 2 men in the penalty box. Late in the 3rd Onondaga ran into penalty trouble allowing Mike King to score on the powerplay and send the game into overtime.

The Knights defense was equally strong in the extra frame, shutting out the Red Hawks for all 10 minutes while Raj Wasson and Brennan Sarazin notched the winning and insurance markers to give Nepean the victory and even their season record at 2 wins and 2 losses.

Knights Win Home Opener

April 30, 2003 at Merivale Arena

The Knights opened a 3 game home stand with a convincing 14 - 8 win over the Gloucester Griffins. Nepean opened the scoring just 2 minutes into the game, but let the Griffins tied it up on a power-play marker less than 2 minutes later. That would be as close as Gloucester would get as the Knights rattled off 3 straight goals and headed to the locker room with a 4 - 2 first period lead.

On a 2 man advantage to start the second, Gloucester scored 5 seconds into the frame cutting the lead to 1, but Nepean would fire 8 straight unanswered goals by the 11 minute mark, chasing the starting Griffins goalie from the nets. At the end of 2 it was Nepean 13 - Gloucester 4.

The 3rd period was a penalty filled affair with the Knights losing their composure and taking the majority of needless penalties. The Griffins capitalized on their chances outshooting Nepean 22 - 6 and outscoring the Knights 4 - 1.

Nepean Scoring:

In the Spartan game the Knights managed to get within 2 goals at one point early in the third period, but let the momentum slip away. At Onondaga the Knights never got closer than 6 goals back.
