Entertaining Game Ends in a Low Scoring Tie (May 3, 2009)

The Markham Ironheads were in town this weekend and took on the Knights on Sunday.   The Ironheads, coming off a strong win over Gloucester came out to a quick two goal lead. The Knights responded later in the period, but couldn't put a second goal together to take the lead.   The second period saw the teams move into a 3-3 tie, with plenty of good action and great goaltending at both ends of the floor.  After exchanging goals in the third period, the teams ended regulation play tied at 4.  Both teams had some tremendous chances in the overtime frame, but the goalies for both team were just too much for the shooters.  A very good game in net by Chris Chuback and some very good play by Jordan Weedmark, Brett Lewandowsky, Kyle Drisdelle and Mark Vradenburg.

Scoring for the Knights were:

  • Jordan Weedmark 1g, 1a
  • Brett Lewandowsky 1g
  • Kyle Drisdelle 1g, 3a
  • Mark Vradenburg 1g, 2a
  • Brett Jackson 1a

Knights Win a Tough Battle (May 1, 2009)

The Knights hosted the Cornwall Celtics on Friday and came away with a win and a few bruises. The Celtics, one of the strong teams in 2009 came out scoring and were quickly away to a 2-0 lead. The Knights looked a bit shaken and somewhat stunned to be so quickly behind the eight ball. The team managed to tightened up their porous defense and eventually brought the score even at two. After exchanging a couple of goals each, the teams left for the dressing room tied after one period. The second period saw Nepean and Cornwall score only a few goals, finishing the period 6-5 for Nepean, but saw them start what seemed like a constant parade to the penalty box. Both teams suffered from this problem and the they started the third period with Nepean up by one goal. Several fights marked the third period with a full slate of penalties for both sides. The Knights scored a few more goals and Cornwall one more as well to finish the game 9-6. Overall a strong game in net by Joe Tallis and some very good play by Jordan Weedmark, Brett Lewandowsky, Matt Tenute and Andy Hancock.

Scoring for the Knights were:

  • Jordan Weedmark 3g, 4a
  • Brett Lewandowsky 2g, 3a
  • Matt Tenute 2g
  • Graham Murray 1g
  • Kyle Drisdelle 1g, 2a
  • Mark Vradenburg 2a
  • Brett Jackson 1a
  • Mike Zanyk 1a

Knights Lose Home Opener (April 26, 2009)

The home opener on Sunday saw the Knights take on last year’s Eastern division champion Halton Hills Bulldogs at Merivale arena.  Nepean started out with a series of penalties that got them into trouble early as the Bulldogs converted 3 for 3 powerplay opportunities.  Behind the eight ball early in the game the Knights put on a strong defensive show for the rest of the period and came away with down 5-1.  Penalties again were a factor in the second period with the Bulldogs scoring on two powerplays.  The second and third period saw the Nepean defense tighten a bit more and these periods ended 4-2 and 3-1 for an overall score of 12-4.  Joe Tallis had a very good game in net for the Knights and certain made many key stops during the game that would otherwise have been goals.

Scoring for the Knights were:

  • Kyle Drisdelle 2g, 1a;
  • Tyler Buchanan 1g, 2 a;
  • Mark Vradenburg 1g;
  • Brett Lewandowsky 3a; and
  • Matt Tenute 2a.

Low Scoring Season Opener (April 24, 2009)

The Knights travelled to Akwesasne on Friday to start the 2009 season against the amalgamated Akwesasne and Cornwall teams (playing under the Cornwall Celtics organization).  The Celtics were expected to be strong in 2009 and did not disappoint.  The Knights took a strong defensive game to the Turtledome for this game.  The first period saw the teams exchange goals, with only a few minor penalties for each side.  The period ended 3-2.  The second and third saw Cornwall score one goal in each period, accounting for all the scoring of 5-2.  Several breakaways and a second period full of penalties illustrated a need for discipline on a young Knights team … growing pains that will certainly be addressed quickly.  Overall a strong defensive outing and impressive goaltending to start the season.

Scoring for the Knights were:

  • Mark Vradenburg 1 g;
  • Brett Lewandowsky 1 g;
  • Jordan Moran 1 a;
  • Tyler Buchanan 1 a;  and
  • Joe Tallis 1 a.
